Revel

Back Office

Revel’s Back Office is the way businesses maintain and track their inventory, and a main component to the point-of-sale’s experience. Our goal was to design a simplified back office experience that lessens the stress of running a small business, lowers support costs, and sets customers up for success.

Outcomes

  • Testing showed significant improvements in product creation (~40% quicker).
  • Lack of metrics has made it difficult to quantify success, but qualitative research showed users were approximately 72% happier with the experience.
  • Next steps were to continue improving how modifiers are incorporated into product creation.

Revel’s previous back office product was feature-rich, with an abundance of functionality most smaller clients don’t use. The complicated product caused high volumes of support calls from these clients.

Looking for a simple back office experience that sets them up for success

Biggest pain point is creating and maintaining products

Frustration with jumping between screens to create a product for their inventory

I started with style guides before beginning new designs and aimed to reflect the current Revel branding while keeping it clean and minimal. I also created an icon font to match the icons on the iPad POS for a seamless visual language across our products.

We introduced a new landing page with an overview of how their products are doing, along with information on the financial aspect of their business.

An important part of running a business was developing reports, so we created some report options based on user feedback.

I also consolidated the product creation into a simplified details page. We narrowed down product attributes to essential fields, inventory was simplified and also added to product details.

Importing products in a spreadsheet was a top requested feature, but the challenge is most POS systems won’t match up exactly. We introduced an option to map those fields to Rev’s for easy importing and designed it so similar fields would be mapped automatically.

We added functionality that includes bulk editing by selecting multiple products and then apply actions. This allows for users to apply an action to multiple products at once, making process quicker.
