Facebook Language Settings

Following the latest redesign of Facebook, the language setting was eliminated. This feature is crucial for ensuring users can interact in their preferred language, which enhances their overall experience. Consequently, we noticed a decline in user engagement metrics. As the lead designer for the web experience, I collaborated closely with the Facebook design team to create a new entry point for the language menu.

Outcomes

  • Identified the various language settings used across Facebook platforms and introduced a cohesive experience across platforms.
  • Updated the dropdowns in Facebook Web settings to include suggested languages and regions with additional info below each option for easy understanding.
  • This work was also a key piece in keeping Facebook’s community translation process in place as Facebook web went through a redesign.
  • Developed a strong relationship with Facebook’s web team to ensure a seamless experience for our users.

Once we learned our users were struggling to use Facebook in their preferred language, we worked closely with Facebook leads to bring settings to a prominent place. The update also removed access to our community translation.

The original experience had its issues as well, with a long list of languages without helpful groupings, search or recommendations.

As part of the localization team, I worked with a variety of cross-functional partners to understand the opportunities and propose a new flow to get buy-in from localization and Facebook leadership.

To keep the language and region selection experience consistent with the new menu, we updated the dropdowns in Facebook Web settings to include suggested languages and regions with additional info below each option for easy understanding.

I proposed an updated menu for both internal Meta employees who support translation and our community translators. This provided our translators with additional settings and resources to support their translation experience within Facebook.

We introduced regional settings and brought in additional language settings into Facebook Settings to allow our users to have even more control of how they experience Facebook in their preferred languages.
