Meta

Covid-19 Symptom Survey and Map

During the COVID-19 pandemic, policymakers and public health systems sought to understand its impact and plan protective measures for communities. We collaborated with academic institutions to encourage participation in a survey across Meta products to gather insights. This initiative was a top priority for Meta’s CEO, and I was brought in due to the tight timeline and high-pressure nature of the project.

Outcomes

  • Using data collected across Meta’s 3+ billion users, we developed a responsive map and website to assist policymakers, public health systems, researchers, and nonprofits in understanding COVID-19 for informed decision-making.
  • Protecting privacy was essential; we aimed to balance our discussions on privacy with clear privacy statements.
  • This project attracted media attention, news sources used our API data to populate their maps or embedded our map, and it initiated a new effort within Meta’s Data For Good team.

Using the data from a shared survey with Carnegie Melon University, we created an interactive map and responsive website to help policymakers and public health systems, along with researchers and nonprofits, understand COVID-19 in their area so they can make informed decisions about what’s best for their communities.

Protecting privacy was a core component of this research; and worked to strike a balance on how we talked about privacy and where we surfaced privacy statements. It was important to share other helpful resources to support the global pandemic, including a Covid-19 information center.

With Meta’s company brand still underway, we explored a variety of color options to present to the company CEO and other leadership for approval.

We partnered with academic institutions to prompt people on Facebook to participate in a survey about their health. Having a base of over 3 billion users gave us the unique opportunity to reach people in an unprecedented way of conducting research.

Many news organizations reported on the initiative, leading to 17 million unique visits in the first 24 hours after launching the tracker. This project was also shared broadly by Meta’s CEO.
