Accessibility at Meta

With increasing regulations focused on equitable experiences for people with disabilities and lack of centralized guidance at the company, Meta needed to establish a central team to support product teams while helping Designers in creating accessible products.

Outcomes

  • Established the centralized Design team supporting thousands of designers across the company.
  • Launched an Accessible Design course and worked with the education team to scale for other roles.
  • Established processes with Accessibility leadership to support product teams across Meta.
  • Supported the Design Systems workstream to scale accessible solutions, targeting 30% of issue remediation.

With over 1.3 billion people worldwide living with significant disabilities, we cannot exclude anyone from our offerings. Accessibility is also central to Meta's mission of fostering human connection through technology.

Design is essential for creating accessible experiences and is located at the top of the product lifecycle funnel, so we integrated it into Meta’s design process. Additionally, we established a centralized accessibility team to support designers effectively using the hub and spoke model.

This effort included establishing a new Design team, instituting processes with Accessibility leadership, supporting education materials, and developing strategy for Design Systems teams across Meta to scale accessible solutions. I grew the Product Design team from myself to 6 and supported my Content Design partner in growing content support as well.

A personal initiative of mine was to create a course for all new-to-Meta Designers about the importance of building products for all. This large effort meant chains of approvals across the company and I led the course creation in partnership with other company experts.

Design systems enable teams to create standardized user experiences by minimizing redundancy and fostering a common language and we discovered that design system standards could resolve nearly 30% of accessibility issues. As Design Lead, I advocated for prioritizing this initiative and contributed to its success. Key outcomes included establishing company-wide guidelines, strengthening ties with Meta's design systems teams, and presenting at the Design Systems summit.
